Rag Rugs are thought to have originated in Scandinavia, the Vikings bringing the craft to Britain, and thence to America via the early settlers, where it is very popular today. Rag Rugs were at their peak in the 19th. and early part of the 20th. century, and the making of them was essential in working-class households, not only as something utilitarian, but also as a part of home decoration. In the latter part of the 20th. century interest diminished except where economic hardship was prevalent. However, today there is a great revival in the art/craft of rug making as it is environmentally friendly, inexpensive and produces both utilitarian pieces of work and creative art work. One aspect of rug making which has not been mentioned so far, is the therapeutic aspect of the work. Many of our members have had various traumas in their lives, and have found that making a rug or wall – hanging has helped them to work through the situation. So it can also be a vehicle by which healing can take place. History History
